Plateau killings are sponsored, 64 communities taken over by Bandits – Gov. Muftwang

The governor of Plateau State Caleb Muftwang has described the recent deadly attacks across the state as a “sponsored genocide,” revealing that armed bandits have forcefully taken over at least 64 communities.
Speaking on Tuesday during Channels Television program Politics Today, Muftwang raises alarm on the scale and coordination of violence across the state especially in Bokkos Local Government Area, where over 50 people have been killed and thousands displaced.
“I honestly see no other explanation than genocide being sponsored by terrorists,” Muftwang said. “The critical question now is: who is behind this? Security agencies must help uncover the masterminds.”
The governor stated that the urgent need for collaboration among security forces to expose and dismantle the networks fueling the unrest. “This is clearly orchestrated. It’s not random. I’m confident that security agencies, working in unity and not at cross-purposes, can uncover the intelligence needed to end this crisis,” he added.
Muftwang comments come amid an alarming surge in violence in Plateau State. He disclosed that dozens of villages across Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, and Riyom LGAs have been overrun by armed groups, with original residents displaced and their ancestral lands now occupied.
“As I speak, no fewer than 64 communities have been taken over by bandits. These areas have been renamed, and people now live there comfortably after forcing out the original inhabitants,” he said.
Long plagued by ethno-religious tensions and conflicts between farmers and herders, Plateau State now faces what Muftwang calls a more “systematic and organized” threat, far beyond typical communal clashes.
“These attacks follow a clear pattern. They are deliberate and well-planned,” he said.
The governor’s revelations have triggered fresh calls for decisive federal intervention and a strong security presence to reclaim the seized communities and protect vulnerable residents.
