Police deny involvement of First Lady’s convoy in Ondo tragedy
The Ondo State Police Command has refuted reports alleging that a vehicle from the convoy of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was involved in the death of a young girl in Akure on Thursday.
Senator Tinubu was in the state to launch the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme and distribute 10,000 professional kits—including Crocs and scrubs—to midwives in the South-West region.
In a statement released by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Olufunmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the police described the report—initially published by Sahara Reporters—as false and misleading.
“The attention of the Ondo State Police Command has been drawn to a false report alleging that the convoy of the First Lady was responsible for the tragic death of a young girl in Akure,” the statement read.
“However, eyewitnesses and preliminary investigations have confirmed that the incident was caused by a hit-and-run driver in an unregistered white Lexus vehicle—not by any vehicle linked to the First Lady’s convoy.”
The spokesperson added that a witness immediately pursued the fleeing vehicle on a motorcycle after the incident, which occurred in the Oba-Ile area of Akure. Multiple witnesses and the victim’s parents supported this account.
The police also corrected inaccuracies in the initial report, noting that the child was seven years old—not nine, as claimed.
The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State has since visited the bereaved family, assuring them of a thorough and transparent investigation into the matter.
“At no point was the First Lady’s convoy involved in this tragedy,” the statement reiterated.
