On this day in 1986, City won our first FA Youth Cup trophy. To mark the occasion, let’s take a look back at all of our successes in the competition.

Manchester City have reached the final of the prestigious competition on 11 occasions and collected the trophy three times.

After reaching the final in 1979 and 1980 we won it for the first time in 1986 with victory over Manchester United.

We then won it again in 2008 with a victory over Chelsea before collecting the trophy again in 2020 by beating the same side.

Here’s how City triumphed in the competitions…

1986: CITY 3-1 MANCHESTER UNITED

City had a proud history of producing homegrown players for the first team from our Platt Lane headquarters and we finally won the trophy for the first time after 33 years.

Many of that side would go on to become Club legends and in total, seven of the players that featured in the final would play for the first team.

Among the stars of the side were David White, who made 342 appearances for City, scoring 96 goals, former club captain Steve Redmond (287 appearances), Ian Brightwell (380 appearances), Andy Hinchcliffe (139 appearances), Paul Moulden (79 appearances and 26 goals) and Paul Lake, who played 134 times before his career was cruelly cut short after a knee injury.

Ian Scott also made 33 appearances for City before playing for Stoke, Crewe and Bury, while Andy Thackeray had a successful career at clubs including Newport, Wrexham and Rochdale and Steve Macauley made more than 250 appearances for Crewe.

City beat Tranmere, Blackburn, Blackpool, Leicester, Fulham and Arsenal to set up an all-Manchester final.

The first leg was played at Old Trafford in front of more than 7,500 fans with a late penalty by Lake securing a 1-1 draw.

More than 18,000 supporters were at Maine Road for the second leg to see City triumph with a 2-0 victory thanks to an early goal from David Boyd and a second from Moulden.

Three years on, many of that side were regulars in the first team and recorded another famous win over United when City beat Sir Alex Ferguson’s side 5-1.

2008: CITY 4-2 CHELSEA

City were beaten twice in finals before claiming the trophy for a second time just over two decades later.

Nearly 20,000 fans were at the Etihad Stadium for the second leg after a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge thanks to a Daniel Sturridge goal.

The highly-rated striker was ruled out of the game with a knee injury and City suffered another early blow when Ryan McGivern scored an own goal.

But goals from Ben Mee and Vladimir Weiss put us ahead before half-time and David Ball wrapped up the win with a late third.

Many of the side would go on to the play for the first team including Sturridge, Weiss, McGivern, Mee, Dedyrk Boyata and Alex Nimely.

However, many would be successful with other clubs while Kieran Trippier, Boyata, McGivern, Weiss, Sturridge and Robbie Mak also became regulars for their country.
