Obasanjo call for support in remodelling Ogun Central Mosque
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged Nigerians to embrace acts of charity, emphasizing that such benevolent deeds bring divine rewards from God.
The former president made the appeal on Friday during the public presentation and unveiling of the prototype and designs for the remodelling of the Egba Central Mosque in Kobiti, Abeokuta. The event took place at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, located in Ogun State’s capital.
The extensive project, spearheaded by the Egba Muslim Council, involves the renovation of the mosque as well as the construction of additional facilities, including an administrative block, a library, a Quranic Academy, a multipurpose social hall, an Imam’s residence, a shopping complex, a medical centre, and a guest house.
Leading the campaign for the mosque’s transformation, Obasanjo urged attendees and believers to support the initiative, stressing that “such charitable acts attract divine reward.”
“This is a project that all Nigerians, irrespective of religion or status, must be part of. It requires collective effort to ensure its successful and timely completion,” he added.
Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who was represented by the Deputy Governor Mrs. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, hailed the project as a significant step by the Egba community, particularly Egba Muslims, in strengthening the presence of Islam. He acknowledged Obasanjo’s role in fostering religious harmony and tolerance, encouraging the people to always priotize peaceful coexistence.
The governor also pledged to contribute to the project by building the mosque’s administrative block and library.
Former Governor of the state , Sen Iklil Ibikunle Amosun praised the initiative and committed to constructing the mosque’s multipurpose hall, in addition of N100 million donation towards the project.
Sir Kessington Adebutu, represented by his son, Ladi Adebutu, also pledged N100 million to support the initiative.
Other prominent figures, including Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Ishola and Senator Shuaib Salisu, who donated N10 million each.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, who unveiled the mosque’s prototype, commended the Egba Muslim Council’s efforts and urged Nigerians to continue their support. He also vowed to personally engage influential Nigerians to mobilize further resources for the mosque’s completion.
The Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, reflected on the long-overdue remodelling, highlighting its historical importance and the role of all stakeholders in preserving religious and cultural heritage for future generations.
The Grand Mufti of Ilorin Emirate and guest lecturer Sheikh Sulaimon-Faruq Onikijipa emphasized the vital role of mosques in Islam as centres of peace, unity, and community development. He encouraged further contributions to the mosque project, describing it as a means of earning divine reward.
Baba Adinni of Egbaland, Retired Navy Captain Rasheed Raji, stated that the mosque’s remodelling symbolized more than just physical infrastructure; it represented a renewed commitment to education, worship, and community development.
The committee overseeing the project, led by Alhaji Abdulhakeem Tunji-Kalejaiye, confirmed that 78 houses around the central mosque in Kobiti would be demolished to make room for the new development. The displaced residents will be compensated with new homes to be built on 22 acres of land in the Sodeke-Titun Sabo area of Abeokuta.
