Don’t vent your frustrations on us – Senate to Bakare
The Nigerian Senate has issued a strong response to recent criticisms from Pastor Tunde Bakare, urging him not to direct personal grievances at the 10th National Assembly.
In a statement signed by Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, the Senate described Bakare’s comments as “sweeping and disparaging,” warning that such remarks risk misleading the public and undermining trust in the country’s democratic institutions.
“Pastor Bakare has long played a role in national discourse,” Adaramodu acknowledged, “but his latest statements stray from constructive critique into rhetoric laced with unverified claims and undue contempt.”
The Senate pointed to Bakare’s political background including his past bids for both the presidency and vice presidency suggesting that his recent remarks may be influenced by personal political leanings.
“His statements now sound more like politically charged sermons than balanced commentary,” Adaramodu said. “As someone who straddles both religious and political spheres, Pastor Bakare’s words carry significant influence and should be wielded with care.”
The Senate also reminded Bakare of his legal background, emphasizing that he should be mindful of constitutional boundaries, especially regarding ongoing court matters.
Addressing accusations of being subservient to the Executive, the Senate reaffirmed its independence, citing its opposition to the proposed state of emergency in Rivers State a move Bakare referenced as evidence of its oversight role.
“Our track record demonstrates our autonomy,” the statement read. “No unconstitutional proposals including any notion of a third term agenda have been submitted to or entertained by this Assembly.”
Calling for greater responsibility in public discourse, the Senate urged prominent figures to avoid inflammatory rhetoric that could destabilize the democratic process.
“While we fully respect Pastor Bakare’s right to free expression,” the statement concluded, “we encourage him and other national voices to embrace truth, unity, and constructive dialogue over political showmanship. We remain committed to engaging with all Nigerians in the spirit of transparency and good governance.”
