Roman Abramovich to break silence on Chelsea sale in upcoming book
Former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is set to speak publicly for the first time about the sale of the club in a new book scheduled for release this summer.
The book titled Sanctioned and authored by Nick Purewal will feature rare interviews with Abramovich, who owned the club from 2002 to 2022. Published by Biteback Publishing, Sanctioned also includes insights from all parties involved in the £2.5 billion sale to Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, supported by over 50 interviews.
Abramovich, a Russian national, was forced to sell the club after being sanctioned by the UK government in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Since then, the billionaire has remained largely silent, with this marking his first on-the-record interview since 2006.
During his 19-year tenure, Chelsea became one of Europe’s elite clubs, winning five Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies among a host of other honors. However, under new ownership, the club has experienced a period of instability, though recent performances have sparked hope for a Champions League return.
Abramovich’s reflections in Sanctioned are expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the sale and his legacy at Stamford Bridge.
